The UK Government’s recent announcements of an Onshore Wind Taskforce, and establishment of Great British Energy signal a major leap forward in the country’s clean energy transition.
During the King’s Speech on 17 July, it was revealed that a new state-owned entity, Great British Energy, will be established. This body, headquartered in Scotland, aims to accelerate investment in renewable energy, including offshore wind, and to help lower consumer bills over time. Alongside this, the Planning and Infrastructure Bill promises to simplify consent processes and support a new wave of infrastructure development.
In a complementary move, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has unveiled the creation of an Onshore Wind Taskforce. This group is tasked with reviving the pipeline of onshore wind projects that had dwindled due to previous restrictive planning rules. The Government’s goal is to double the UK’s onshore wind capacity by 2030, enhancing a key component of the nation’s renewable energy strategy.
Mara Rastall, CEO of Enspec Power, commented on these developments:
“I am delighted to see the UK Government’s recent announcement of the Onshore Wind Taskforce. Over our 24 years in business, Enspec Power has proudly worked on hundreds of onshore wind farms. This task force represents an incredible step forward in achieving the UK’s ambitious net zero goals by bringing together industry leaders to address the challenges of the industry in achieving targets instead of setting baseless goals.
The formation of this taskforce signifies a strong commitment to expanding onshore wind energy, a crucial component of our renewable energy landscape. While we recognise the numerous challenges that lie ahead, the inclusion of energy professionals who are directly engaged in tackling these issues daily is a promising approach. Their firsthand insights and experiences are invaluable in devising effective solutions.
At Enspec Power, we remain committed to advancing renewable energy and are enthusiastic about the potential impact of the Onshore Wind Taskforce. Together, with industry experts and governmental support, we can pave the way for a sustainable and greener future for the UK.”
With these strategic initiatives, including the establishment of Great British Energy, overturning the defacto ban on onshore windfarms and the new Onshore Wind Taskforce, the UK is poised for significant progress in renewable energy. Enspec Power is excited to contribute to these advancements and looks forward to the continued growth of the industry.
