From Design to Virtual Reality: Unlocking the Value of 3D Modelling

3D modelling has become an increasingly valuable tool for helping people understand complex power infrastructure.

Throughout a project lifecycle, detailed models can support design reviews, improve stakeholder understanding, and help teams visualise how equipment will be integrated within an existing site. We have found they provide a level of context that can be difficult to achieve through drawings alone.

For All-Energy 2026, we explored another application of that same technology.

Using a detailed 3D model from a large-scale power resilience project, colleagues from Engineering, IT, Software Engineering, and Marketing collaborated to create an immersive virtual reality experience. Visitors were able to step inside the project, explore the installation, and gain a clearer understanding of the engineering behind it.

The project demonstrated how digital models can continue to create value long after the design stage. Information developed to support engineering and project delivery can also be used to improve communication with clients, support training activities, and help non-technical stakeholders better understand complex infrastructure.

Deep Nandre, Software Engineer, said:

“Working on a virtual reality project gave us the opportunity to apply our software engineering skills in a completely different environment. It also showed how AI-assisted development tools can help teams quickly learn new technologies and deliver solutions internally.”

Nathan O’Brien, Senior IT Manager, added:

“The aim was to create a more engaging way for people to understand what we do. By building on an existing engineering model, we were able to demonstrate how digital assets can be repurposed to support communication and engagement.”

The positive response at All-Energy highlighted the growing role digital technologies can play in the power sector. While the virtual reality experience attracted attention, the wider story is about the value of high-quality engineering data and the different ways it can be used throughout the life of a project.

As digital engineering tools continue to evolve, opportunities to improve project understanding, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge sharing will continue to grow alongside them.
