Arc Flash Assessment for a 33 kV Onshore Wind Farm

Arc Flash Assessment for a 33 kV wind farm ensuring compliance, and safer operations with minimal additional engineering.

Enspec power

The Problem in Detail

The study aimed to determine Arc Flash incident energy levels at the main HV and LV switchboards, and assessing cost-effective mitigation strategies to keep incident energy below 40 cal/cm² wherever feasible.

Finding the Solution

Using the ETAP software package, Enspec’s engineers expanded and refined the existing protection coordination model developed during earlier studies, incorporating updated system parameters, device settings, and network configurations to ensure accurate Time–Current Characteristic (TCC) analysis and coordination assessment.

Results

Following adjustments, all HV and LV main switchboards incident energy levels were observed below 40 cal/cm². These results provided traceable, data-backed assurance that the system operates safely and efficiently.

What that means for the project

This project shows that early inclusion of Arc Flash analysis requires minimal additional effort but delivers significant value by protecting both people and assets.
