Harmonic Filter Design Paper at IPST 2025

This year, our Director of Consultancy, Kerim Ozer, presented our paper “Passive Harmonic Filter Design Study for a MV Network Connected BESS: A Case Study” at the International Conference on Power Systems Transients (IPST), held in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The paper examines the design and validation of a medium-voltage passive harmonic filter developed to ensure harmonic grid compliance for a 50 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the UK. During commissioning and post-commissioning measurements, harmonic non-compliances were observed across several operating modes, with exceedances of ER G5/5 planning limits at harmonic orders between the 14th and 65th.

To address these challenges, Enspec conducted detailed harmonic measurements and developed a validated DIgSILENT PowerFactory model to investigate root causes such as inverter self-impedance and background network impedance amplification. The study then demonstrates the design of a cost-effective 5.0 MVAR C-type harmonic filter, followed by a comparison of harmonic voltages and impedance sweeps with and without the proposed solution.

This research highlights the importance of accurate modelling, site-based measurement, and practical design considerations in real-world BESS applications, and reflects our commitment to leading expertise in harmonic studies, power quality, and grid integration.
