Why maintenance strategies are changing
Many renewable sites were developed with a project-led mindset, and maintenance strategies often followed the same approach. Equipment was serviced independently, contractor support varied between sites and asset knowledge could become fragmented over time.
As portfolios grow, operators require clearer visibility of asset condition alongside maintenance strategies that support long-term operational planning. This is one reason framework agreements are becoming more common across renewable operations.
A framework approach in practice
Enspec has supported reactive compensation assets across eight operational wind farms throughout the UK through a multi-year maintenance framework agreement with ScottishPower Renewables.
The agreement includes annual maintenance of transformers, shunt reactors and capacitor banks connected to wind farm distribution networks. These assets support voltage control requirements and help maintain compliant export to the grid.
During inspections, most equipment was found to be operating effectively. Existing issues within one STATCOM transformer were identified early and addressed through refurbishment before wider operational impact developed. Preventive maintenance activities also highlighted emerging concerns elsewhere across the portfolio, allowing remedial plans to be scheduled in advance.
That visibility is one of the strongest advantages of a long-term maintenance strategy. Operators gain a clearer understanding of asset condition across multiple sites rather than responding only when faults become critical.
Supporting long-term grid compliance
As renewable infrastructure continues to mature, operators are placing greater emphasis on proactive asset management and stronger technical oversight across their portfolios.
