The Problem in Detail
To meet grid code reactive power requirements, EDF Renewables UK originally installed a STATCOM system. However, after nearly a decade of reliable operation, the system began experiencing recurrent failures, leading to increasing maintenance demands and costs. A more reliable, lower-maintenance solution was required to ensure continued grid compliance.

Finding the Solution
Enspec, in collaboration with EDF Renewables UK, Vestas, and Athena PTS, designed and installed a hybrid reactive power compensation system using six 8.5 MVAr Point-on-Wave (PoW) switched capacitor banks. This solution provided: Consistent reactive power support to replace the STATCOM. Seamless integration with existing Vestas turbine controls.

Results
The system offers lower maintenance costs compared to the previous STATCOM, minimal downtime to ensure continued grid code compliance, fast and reliable switching with re-energisation in seconds, and lower inrush currents to reduce electrical stress on the system.

What that means for the project
The successful implementation of the Point-on-Wave capacitor bank solution at Fallago Rig has delivered a cost-effective and sustainable approach to reactive power management for EDF Renewables UK.

Client Testimonial
Rob Mitchell, EDF Renewables UK & Ireland Senior Electrical Engineer: "We’ve been incredibly impressed with Enspec’s expertise in not only providing the P-o-W switched capacitor element of the hybrid solution, but also their capacity to identify and mitigate risks associated with adding and switching large capacitor banks onto an existing electrical system in such a manner.”
