The Problem in Detail
To meet grid code reactive power requirements, EDF Renewables UK originally installed a STATCOM system. However, after nearly a decade of reliable operation, the system began experiencing recurrent failures, leading to increasing maintenance demands and costs. A more reliable, lower-maintenance solution was required to ensure continued grid compliance.

Finding the Solution
Enspec, in collaboration with EDF Renewables UK, Vestas, and Athena PTS, designed and installed a hybrid reactive power compensation system using six 8.5 MVAr Point-on-Wave (PoW) switched capacitor banks. This solution provided: Consistent reactive power support to replace the STATCOM. Seamless integration with existing Vestas turbine controls. Low-maintenance operation, reducing ongoing costs

Results
Lower maintenance costs compared to the previous STATCOM system
Minimal downtime, ensuring continued compliance with grid code requirements
Fast & reliable switching, with re-energisation in seconds
Lower inrush currents, reducing electrical stress on the system

What that means for the project
The successful implementation of the Point-on-Wave capacitor bank solution at Fallago Rig has delivered a cost-effective and sustainable approach to reactive power management for EDF Renewables UK.
