The Problem in Detail
The generating station had experienced repeated failures of its main auxiliary distribution transformer, raising concerns around the performance of the existing protection scheme. A review of the protection settings identified several areas where coordination between devices could be improved, including overlapping protection characteristics and insufficient time discrimination.
Finding the Solution
Enspec carried out a detailed Protection Coordination Study for the combined cycle power plant, modelling the network in ETAP down to the 0.4 kV LV network. Existing protection settings were reviewed against IEEE coordination requirements to assess selectivity, fault clearance and device coordination throughout the system.
Making it all Work
The study evaluated the performance of the existing protection scheme and identified settings that could affect the sequence of operation during fault conditions. Revised settings were developed to improve discrimination between protection devices and provide greater protection for critical equipment across the site.
