Job Title: Senior Electrical Engineer

Salary: From £60k (depending on experience)

Location: Washington, UK (NE37 3HB)

Overview

Enspec is evolving its manufacturing capability, and this role sits at the heart of that shift. We are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer who combines deep technical expertise with hands-on manufacturing experience. You will lead the delivery of high-quality engineered products—harmonic filters, PFC equipment, and wider power-quality systems—through accurate design, robust manufacturing packs, thorough testing, and strong root-cause analysis.

You’ll act as a technical authority within our manufacturing environment, ensuring our products meet IEC/BSI standards, comply with grid codes, and are built reliably, safely, and to spec. You will also support onsite surveys to inform accurate design data, taking a share of the responsibilities currently held by junior engineers as the team develops.

This role requires initiative, high technical standards, and the ability to bridge design with real-world manufacturing and testing.

The Role

  • Manufacturing Delivery & Engineering Support
    • Produce complete, accurate, and manufacturable engineering packs—including schematics, BOMs, wiring diagrams, layouts, build instructions, and test plans.
    • Provide real-time technical support to the manufacturing team during assembly, wiring, build, and FAT.
    • Lead fault diagnostics and root-cause analysis for manufacturing issues, field returns, or test failures.
    • Own engineering change control and ensure updates flow efficiently into manufacturing documentation.
    • Coordinate and lead factory acceptance testing (FAT), including test documentation, witness testing and compliance checks.
    • Ensure all manufactured systems meet IEC, BSI and other relevant UK and international standards.

    Design & Technical Leadership

    • Lead the design and development of advanced electrical systems such as harmonic filters, power factor correction systems, switchgear interfaces and LV/HV assemblies.
    • Validate designs through calculation, simulation, or modelling as appropriate.
    • Drive continuous improvement in manufacturability, product quality, and design consistency.

    Technical Standards & Compliance

    • Maintain working knowledge of IEC/BSI standards for design, manufacturing, testing, and safety.
    • Ensure all designs and manufactured items comply with internal quality procedures and external certification requirements (ISO, grid codes, client specifications).
    • Support documentation and risk assessments relating to electrical safety, test procedures, and compliance.

    Site Surveys & Client Interface

    • Conduct electrical site surveys to capture measurements, installation constraints, and integration requirements.
    • Prepare clear survey reports to feed into accurate design and manufacturing planning.
    • Support pre-installation and post-installation technical queries.

    Testing, Validation & Quality Assurance

    • Lead end-to-end testing and validation of products—including insulation testing, functional testing, continuity checks, harmonic filter tuning checks, etc.
    • Develop test rigs, procedures, and commissioning documentation to support consistent product validation.
    • Identify failure modes and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

    Collaboration, Mentorship & Cross-Team Work

    • Work closely with manufacturing, engineering, procurement, and project teams to ensure smooth product delivery.
    • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and technicians, helping them build diagnostic and manufacturing-readiness skills.
    • Support cross-functional initiatives to improve quality, reduce build time, and strengthen standardisation.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; a Master’s or higher is preferred.
  • Significant hands-on experience in electrical engineering, with a focus on design and development of electrical systems.
  • Extensive experience in the renewable energy sector and related industries.
  • Deep understanding of electrical standards and regulations, both national and international.
  • Proven track record of technical innovation and practical application in electrical engineering.
  • Proficient in using advanced electrical engineering software and tools for design and analysis.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to tackle complex technical challenges.
  • Strong project management skills with experience leading technical projects to successful completion.
  • High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in technical documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative technical team.

Preferences

  • Proficiency with electrical CAD/design tools (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar).
  • Experience in the design of reactive power compensation and power quality systems from 11 kV to 400 kV, including harmonic filters and associated equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop junior engineering talent.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated with the latest advancements in electrical engineering.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Flexible working hours and a supportive work environment.
  • Opportunities for career growth and advancement within a dynamic and growing company.
  • Training and development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • 24 days of holidays plus bank holidays.
