As the summer draws to a close, so does the enriching experience of having Wiley Thornton from Duke University and Hudson Fry from the University of Florida as interns at Enspec Power. Their time here has been transformative, both for them and for the company. Wiley and Hudson brought fresh ideas and innovative thinking, making significant contributions to our consultancy department and leaving a lasting impact on our operations.
A Focus on Automation and Efficiency
During their time as interns at Enspec Power, Wiley and Hudson tackled a critical project aimed at automating key aspects of our Power System Studies. This project centred around developing a script designed to streamline our processes, enhancing both efficiency and accuracy. Previously, one of our data analysis processes was largely manual, demanding substantial time and effort from our engineers. However, the new script they developed has revolutionised this workflow.
Using multiple programming languages and industry-standard platforms, Wiley and Hudson created a tool that automates the processing of this essential data. This script not only reduces the time required for manual data analysis but also significantly lowers the risk of errors. The result is a more standardised approach, enabling us to complete more studies in less time and freeing up our team to focus on more complex tasks.
Wiley reflected on their work: “The new script we developed reduces the time needed for analysis from several hours to just 15-30 minutes. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how our contributions are streamlining the workflow and improving reliability.”
Setting a New Standard
The impact of their work extends beyond just technical improvements. By simplifying and accelerating our processes, Wiley and Hudson have set a new standard for organisational efficiency within our consultancy department. Their script is now set to be integrated into our regular procedures, becoming an essential tool in our operations. This improvement not only enhances our current capabilities but also lays the groundwork for future innovations.
Hudson shared his thoughts on the experience: “I’ve learned more during these two months than in any year of schooling. Working on this project has given me a deep understanding of power engineering and how a successful company operates. It’s exciting to know that our work here will continue to benefit Enspec long after we’ve left.”
Our Chief Technology Officer Tim Rastall (who himself started as an intern at Enspec Power 10 years ago) echoed these sentiments: “Wiley and Hudson’s efforts have set the stage for a more standardised approach, reducing the time needed for manual data analysis and lowering the risk of errors. Their work not only improves our current capabilities but also opens the door for future innovations. We’re very proud of what they’ve achieved and grateful for the positive impact they’ve made.”
A Lasting Legacy
As Wiley and Hudson prepare to return to their studies in the United States, the legacy of their work at Enspec will continue to benefit our team. Their contributions have not only made our processes more efficient but have also paved the way for ongoing improvements and advancements within the company.
To celebrate the end of their internship, the consultancy department held a celebratory dinner, a testament to the strong bonds and positive impressions they’ve left behind. While their time at Enspec may be ending, there is no doubt that Wiley and Hudson are destined for great things. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours and are confident that the skills and insights they gained here will serve them well in whatever path they choose to follow.
As our CTO concluded, “Their work here will leave a lasting legacy, benefiting both our team and the wider community we serve. We’re sure they’re both destined for great things!”
