The Problem in Detail

Connecting the Viking Wind Farm to the Shetland grid came with unique challenges. The network’s weak grid conditions made it highly sensitive to voltage dips, while strict compliance requirements meant even the smallest fluctuation had to be managed. Add in transformer energisation risks and site-wide instability, and it was clear a standard approach wouldn’t work.

Our team carried out extensive studies and on-site testing to design a commissioning method that could reduce transformer inrush currents and maintain stability. Every option was carefully analysed to ensure compliance while protecting equipment and supporting long-term reliability.

Through detailed planning and precise execution, we successfully reduced inrush currents, kept all energisations within compliance thresholds, and created a repeatable process that operators could rely on. Remote access to key devices was also enabled, providing flexibility and security for future operations.
