The Problem in Detail
A Lightning Risk Assessment was required for a 132kV and 33kV substations of a UK wind farm to determine whether additional lightning protection measures were necessary under
BS EN 62305-2.
Finding the Solution
A zone-based assessment was carried out, modelling direct strike (AD) and indirect influence (AM) areas and comparing calculated risk levels against the standard’s tolerable thresholds.
Results
Calculated risks of loss and damage were below tolerable limits, confirming that no additional Lightning Protection System or surge mitigation upgrades were required.
What that means for the project
The developer achieved full compliance without unnecessary protection measures or added capital cost.
