Harmonic Filtering for Battery Energy Storage Systems

An initial harmonic study identified compliance risks at a BESS site designed for electricity trading and frequency response.

The Problem in Detail

An initial G5/5 study identified harmonic non-compliance at multiple orders. Parallel resonances at the 18th, 53rd and 88th harmonics amplified inverter-driven distortion into unacceptable voltage levels.

Finding the Solution

Validation confirmed the issue and refined the severity of harmonic distortion at key orders. A bespoke C-type passive harmonic filter was designed to target the identified resonance points and modify the site impedance profile.

Results

Impedance peaks were reduced, lowering harmonic voltage distortion. Post-installation monitoring confirmed full compliance with G5/5.

What that means for the project

Validation enabled a targeted solution, avoiding unnecessary over-engineering. The site achieved compliance while maintaining efficient operation.
